n8n or Make: choosing to automate with AI
n8n vs Make: compare control, hosting, maintenance and skills before automating tasks with AI in your company.
By Pablo Nastar

A team comparing n8n and Make often looks at the number of connected apps or the look of the editor. These are visible criteria, but they do not say who will fix an interrupted flow, where the data will travel, or how to test an AI step. The right choice starts from the real process and from operational responsibility.
The simple rule to remember: a useful automation must stay understandable when it fails. A tool that is quick to configure can become costly if no one can diagnose the errors. A more controllable platform can, conversely, exceed the team's capabilities if its operation rests on a single person.

We first compare the levels of control, then the testing protocol, the AI-related safeguards, the operating cost, and the situations where neither tool is the right choice.
n8n and Make do not place control in the same spot
Make favours a managed visual experience, whereas n8n also offers a self-hosted path and more technical control. This difference affects the roll-out, the responsibilities and the level of skill required. It does not allow us to name a universal winner.
The Make documentation presents a scenario builder, modules, routers and error-handling mechanisms. The n8n documentation describes nodes, executions, hosting options and component development. These pages state the advertised capabilities; your test should focus on the plan, the version and the connectors actually available.
| Question | Make | n8n | Verification to carry out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who operates the infrastructure? | managed service | managed service or self-hosting | responsibilities, backup, updates |
| Who understands the flow? | trained no-code profile | no-code or technical profile depending on the setup | autonomy after the designer leaves |
| Where does the data travel? | depending on plan and configuration | depending on plan, hosting and nodes | contract, region, logs, subprocessors |
| How is an error handled? | scenario tools and history | executions, logs and workflow logic | recovery, alert, idempotency |
The subject is therefore not « cloud versus security ». A poorly maintained server is not safer by nature than a managed service. Self-hosting adds possible control, but also security, monitoring and continuity tasks.
Compare a process, not a demonstration
A reliable comparison uses the same flow, the same dummy data and the same criteria in both tools. Testing a simple demo in Make and a complex process in n8n produces no usable conclusion.
Choose a representative flow
Take a frequent and reversible task: receive a test form, check fields, classify the request, generate a draft and then ask for human validation. Do not use client data in the first attempt. Measure the readability of the scenario, the time to diagnose and the ability to recover after an error.
Hypothetical implementation. A flow could read an incoming request, remove the unnecessary fields, send a summary to an AI model and then create a draft in the business tool. The draft would stay blocked until a person approves it. This example describes a possible mechanism, not a deployment carried out by Educasium.
Test the cases that break
Remove a mandatory field, change a date format, trigger a timeout and send the same event twice. The team must see whether the scenario creates a duplicate, stops cleanly or continues with false information. Quality is measured more on these cases than on the first successful run.
Our training in automation with Make and Zapier lays the foundations of this reasoning. This comparison adds the question of control and operation, without turning a tool preference into a general rule.
The AI step requires specific safeguards
An AI model adds a probabilistic output to a flow that seemed deterministic. The scenario must therefore control the format, the absence of a response, unexpected content, and decisions that cannot be automated.
Separate suggestion and action
A classification can propose a category; it should not necessarily trigger an irreversible action on its own. A piece of writing can prepare a message; it should not send it without validation if it affects the client relationship. Place the human control at the point where an error becomes costly or hard to recover from.
Keep the useful evidence
Logging all content is not an automatic good practice. Determine what is needed to understand an error, how long to keep it and who may consult it. The CNIL recalls that processing involving personal data must be framed by a purpose, a legal basis and appropriate measures.
The Educasium guide on the confidentiality of AI tools helps classify data before sending it to a service. This classification must come before building the workflow.
The real cost includes operation
The price of a subscription represents only part of the cost. You must add the design time, the operations consumed, the monitoring, the fixing of connectors and the training of the people who will take over the flow.
Ask yourself: what happens if the person who built the scenario is away? A documented automation carries an owner, an objective, accepted inputs, a recovery procedure and a review date. Without these elements, it becomes an invisible dependency.
Also compare the billing model with your real volumes. A small number of complex scenarios and a multitude of short flows do not use the plans in the same way. Run a calculation over several weeks of representative data, then reread the pricing terms at the moment of deciding.
Delimited experience: train for recovery, not only for creation
Educasium trains in understanding and controlling automations; we do not publish here a proprietary benchmark claiming one tool is more profitable. The view defended is simple: a successful workshop ends when several people can explain the flow and diagnose an error, not when the trainer gets a green run.
This approach leads to requiring a decision log, a naming convention and a failure exercise. It slows the demonstration slightly, but produces a transferable skill. Our guide to AI training in companies explains how to embed this control in a skills plan.
When not to choose either of these tools
A visual builder is not always the right layer. If the process is at the core of a product, requires advanced software testing or handles a volume that demands a dedicated architecture, an integration built and maintained as code may be more appropriate. Conversely, developing a bespoke service for a simple administrative flow can create needless debt.
Also do not launch an automation when the process changes every week or when the rules are not stabilised. Document the decisions first. The tool does not fix a contradictory process; it runs its contradictions faster.
Frequently asked questions
Is n8n necessarily more secure because it can be self-hosted?
No. Self-hosting gives control over the environment, but also transfers responsibility for updates, access, backups and monitoring. A neglected instance can be riskier than a properly configured managed offer. The decision must be made with the people responsible for security and infrastructure.
Is Make suitable for an SME without a developer?
Make can be suitable if the team learns to read scenarios, handle errors and manage access. The visual interface does not remove the questions of data, logic and maintenance. Start with a limited and reversible flow. Then appoint an owner and a recovery procedure.
Can an AI model be connected without sending sensitive data?
Yes, if the use case works with public, synthetic or properly minimised data. You must check what each step receives, including logs and intermediary services. Rough anonymisation is not always enough. Have the processing validated when the data carries a particular risk.
Do you need to learn both tools?
Not at first. Learn the common principles first: trigger, transformation, condition, recovery, human control and logging. Then test the same flow in the other tool if a real constraint justifies it. The most durable skill is the ability to reason about the process.
