MCP Revit: scoping a pilot in the practice

MCP Revit: define scope, test copy, permissions and acceptance before letting an assistant act on a model.

An MCP Revit can give an assistant structured access to information or actions in the software. This possibility must not start on a model in production. The first objective is to understand what the server exposes, how Revit executes the action and how the team notices an error.

Concretely, a good pilot does not seek to impress with the number of commands. It proves that a narrow task can be executed, controlled and undone in a prepared environment.

The guide covers defining the test, the technical chain, the four acceptance passes, the BIM roles, the data, the final decision and the stop cases.

Define a task before choosing a server

The use case must be describable without the word « AI ». If the team cannot explain the input, the rule and the expected output, the server will not clarify the need.

A pilot can focus on the inventory of views, the verification of parameters or the preparation of a list of anomalies. Avoid wording like « optimise the model » that hides several business decisions. Do not authorise a modification until the equivalent reading has been compared to Revit's native result.

The official Revit API documentation recalls that extensions act through an API and a precise execution context. An MCP server adds an interface, but the constraints of the software and its API still apply.

Examine the whole technical chain

The MCP server does not act alone: it depends on a client, a model, a Revit component and sometimes a local bridge. Each of these layers can introduce an error or additional access.

LayerMinimum control
AI clientaccounts, history, authorised tools
MCP servercode, licence, dependencies, network
Revit bridgecompatible version, signature, rights
filetest copy, backup, owner
outputlog, preview, validation, rollback

The MCP specification defines the protocol, not the safety of a particular server. The team must therefore inspect the implementation and its provenance. A demonstration video replaces neither the code nor the acceptance testing.

Build the pilot in four passes

The progression reading, proposal, limited writing, recovery reduces the error surface. Each pass must have its criteria and produce a record.

1. Read

Query a dedicated model and compare the returned objects to a schedule or to the interface. Test an empty selection, a deleted object and a missing parameter. The assistant must flag the absence rather than fill in a plausible value.

2. Propose

Ask for a list of changes without execution. The proposal must identify the affected objects, the old value and the new one. A general sentence is not a sufficient preview.

3. Write on a copy

Limit the number of objects and require a confirmation. Check the units, the identifiers and the dependencies. A repeated action must not create a silent duplicate.

4. Recover

Close the client, trigger an error and restart. The team must know where the log is and how to return to the previous state. If recovery depends on the server's developer, this dependency must be accepted explicitly.

Hypothetical implementation. An assistant could read ten views of a training file, propose names compliant with a convention, then modify only those the user ticks. This example describes a possible test, with no client result or claimed deployment.

Separate BIM skill from phrasing

A natural instruction does not turn the user into a BIM manager. The conventions, shared parameters, templates and consequences for deliverables remain business decisions. The assistant must apply a defined rule, not invent one.

Training must therefore bring together a person who knows Revit and a person able to examine the technical component. Our article on AI tools for architects already shows that the tool depends on the flow. The guide AI and BIM situates assistance uses without delegating responsibility for the model.

Data, files and access

A model contains more than geometry: names, phases, families, comments and sometimes project information. Map what the server reads and transmits. Do not assume that a local execution stays local if the client calls a remote model.

The ANSSI offers useful recommendations for generative AI systems. The Educasium guide on the confidentiality of AI data helps classify information. Start with a synthetic file free of client data.

Delimited experience

Educasium does not claim to have deployed an MCP Revit server in a client practice. We offer a training and acceptance method based on test environments, verification and the absence of sensitive project data. This limit is deliberate: an evolving connector must not be presented as a proven production solution without evidence.

The view defended is that the most important skill is not to write a long query. It is to recognise the action that exceeds the authorised scope and refuse it.

Formalise the decision after the pilot

At the end, write a short sheet: task tested, versions, data used, rights granted, errors observed and maintenance load. The conclusion may authorise only reading, ask for a new test or refuse the connector. Also set a review date. Without this record, a temporary demonstration risks becoming a permanent use with no owner.

Limits and counter-cases

A controlled Revit script may be preferable to MCP for a stable and deterministic task. A native schedule may suffice for a simple check. Adding a language model to an already clear rule sometimes increases cost and uncertainty.

The pilot must be suspended if the server is not inspectable, if the version is not compatible or if no test copy exists. Nor should a connector be used to bypass the practice's BIM procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Does MCP Revit replace Dynamo or pyRevit?

Not in general. Dynamo, pyRevit and the API extensions answer automation needs that can be more deterministic. MCP can provide a common interface to an assistant, but adds a layer and a probabilistic output. Compare the task, the maintenance and the need for natural language.

Can you test on a real project if the server only reads?

Reading can already expose confidential information. Start on a synthetic copy to understand the chain and the logs. Then examine the model's conditions and the network access. A business and security authorisation may still be necessary.

Who must validate a proposed action?

The person competent in the BIM rule and responsible for the deliverable. The server's developer does not necessarily know the project's conventions. The validation must focus on the precise objects and the consequences. A generic confirmation is not enough.

How do you know if the pilot is conclusive?

Define, before the test, the acceptable errors, the correction time and the recovery procedure. A conclusive pilot produces a reproducible record, not only a successful demonstration. It must also show its limits. The decision may be not to continue.
